Chapter 1

The author begins with the thesis that Jesus is the fulfillment of the work that God started through the prophets of old and that the work he accomplished is greater than all the angels and through him the old is passed away.

The author explains God’s choice of Jesus and his role in God’s plan to reconcile mankind back to himself.

The example of the Israelites who died in the wilderness is given as a caution about remaining firm in faith to not suffer the same fate.

Entering into the rest comes by spiritually laboring in faith, as given by the example of God entering his rest after completing creation.

The author returns to his focus on Jesus who was chosen by God to experience the same conditions as mankind while in his human existence. His struggle and triumph against evil made him a high priest after the order of Melchisedec as was prophesied.

The author gives a caution about beginning the spiritual growth process and then backing up on it but is confident that the readers will be faithful to receive the promise just as Abraham did.

The author describes Melchisedec and his priesthood found in Genesis 14 and then gives an explanation to prove that Jesus is the high priest after the order of Melchisedec that God prophesied in Psalm 110.

Jesus being a heavenly high priest is the mediator of the new covenant because through his priesthood the old covenant was done away.

The author explains the doing away of the first tabernacle, which was temporary, by the sacrifice of Jesus who gave his life once for all to usher in the new covenant.

The author makes the argument that the law was insufficient because sacrifices had to be made continually, but the new covenant established on the sacrifice of Jesus is eternal.
