1 John

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. – 1 John 3:1 (KJV)

Chapter 1

In his introduction John gives testimony to what they had seen and experienced under Jesus’ ministry and introduces the idea of walking in the light rather than sin.

Chapter 2

John contrasts darkness and light to describe the difference between love and hate as evidenced by keeping the old commandment which is now new. This is demonstrated by either abiding in God or preferring the world.

Chapter 3

John talks about God’s love toward us and how that love manifests through us when we are the sons of God.

Chapter 4

John cautions against the false teachers that are in the world and contrasts that with how God’s love is manifested in believers’ love toward others. Love one to another becomes a litmus test for our love toward God.

Chapter 5

Those that are born of God keep his commandments and have overcome the world. John is writing to encourage those who love God, love one another and have eternal life to recognize and stay separated from wickedness.
